What is the best order to take the exams?
Each exam represents a phase of a project from start to finish. Practice Management(PCM) is the first of the exams, representing the beginning of a project. Construction and Evaluation(CE) represents the last phase in a project. There are several approaches to the order in which you can take the exams. In this post, I will explain some of the ways you can take them and then I will explain the method I use.
Approach One: Take them in order
You can take the exams in the typical order. Starting with PCM, then PJM,PA,PPD,PDD and then CE.
Approach Two: Take them out of order
I have seen some success in people who start with PJM first and then PCM. Some people find that it better correlates with their work experience. Some find taking the shorter exams are better to start with rather than the long exams.
Approach Three(My approach): Group them (PCM,PJM,CE) & (PA,PPD,PDD)
The reason I was able to come back from failing all of my exams was changing my study tactic to grouping. Grouping the exam sections is where I found my success. The reason grouping the exam sections together, studying them as a whole, worked for me was the overlay. These exams each represent a phase in a project. However, in reality, projects have several components moving at once. Phases overlap and play off one another. I grouped PCM,PJM,CE as one group(Group A) and PA,PPD,PDD(Group B) as another. Group A are very heavily based on the AIA contracts while Group B is more site design and building materials. By grouping my exams together, the studying was easier and I was able to pass. Studying as a whole helped me better understand the material and overall exams.
Which method should you pick?
There is no ‘right’ answer for this question. It is all based off what works for you. I found success in grouping them together. But that might now work for you. Which ever way you decide to take them, just try to keep the overall project process in mind and it will help with your decision. Try pairing your first exam with your experience. Build the momentum by putting yourself in the best position to pass the first and the rest will follow.
